Late to the Party

I am now thirty-five years old, which mean I enjoyed much of my conscious childhood in the late 90s and early 2000s. This was the heyday of Pokémon, Attitude Era WWF, PlayStation, N64, and many of the other childhood millennial staples.

One game I never played as a kid was Ocarina of time, and I managed to not know much about the game even with it having come out 28 years ago.

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the hell out of it but also came to the conclusion that late 90’s game developers did not care about your feelings the way that a lot do now.

That pretty much means, that I’m dying a lot.

Like a lot, lot.

I just got to the boss fight of the Forest Temple after fighting four little mysterious goblins that were tougher to find than the point in a political debate between two teenagers.

The game also explains literally nothing.

Modern games:

  • Checkpoints
  • Objective lists
  • Waypoint
  • Characters reminding you where to go

Ocarina of Time just simply hands you a sword and tells you to figure it the f**k out, occasionally grabbing you by the head with a ghostly ceiling hand chucking you out of the temple like Uncle Phil used to do Jazz on Fresh Prince of Belair.

The fact that we had the attention span as children to figure these games out, truly amazes me.

What’s been the most enjoyable is being able to play a game from my favorite era of gaming, truly for the first time.

No nostalgia bias.

Truly just a first ever run-through.

I see this as what will most likely be a long-winding road of me chasing down obscure N64 titles through the winter.
