Story Behind the Song: Kiss Goodnight

New segment!

I’m going to tell you guys the stories behind some of the songs I write, for those who are interested in hearing them.

The first song is called Kiss Goodnight, and it’s part of my regular rotation if you’ve ever heard me at a writer’s night around Nashville.

First here’s the song:

The seed for this song started around 2012 when I had just gotten a new girlfriend that I was desperate to impress. Being that I was a musician, there was always an expectation that I was supposed to write a song for each new girl I dated.

Except for this one, I had nothing.

I couldn’t think of a single word.

Later on, I came up with this riff though, and somehow the riff itself became “the song”.

This girl and I dated for several years, and over the course of our time together I came back to this riff time and time again, trying to figure out words to go with it.

Still nothing.

I would come up with random stuff here and there, but none of it ever sounded all that poetic and like the love song I wanted.

I had all but scrapped the idea until 2017, when we broke up.

The meaning of the song had changed and all of a sudden it was easier to write. Sitting alone in my Kalamazoo apartment, I wrote about three time periods.

Where we started, where we were, and where I was certain I’d be in a few years.

The first verse is dedicated to how we met, and the emotions I recall feeling.

The second verse was during our falling out, and then the third verse is where I pictured myself in a few years (I got over it and its not actually this way, by the way…).

Essentially each period had the same desire to return to those emotions from earlier in the relationship where you would have moved mountains just to kiss that person.

I feel like this song is relatable to a lot of people who have gone through a breakup with a long-term partner. It took me changing as a person to be able to finish this song that started almost a decade ago. People change in relationships after years of being together, and sometimes simply drift apart, which I feel like this song captures.

While I’m not super proud of the video I had for this post, I’m very proud of the writing that went into this song.

Hopefully, I’ll have a studio set up soon and I’ll be able to get some good recordings up!

Thanks for reading!
